Location & Weather

Since your photos will often be taken with natural light, we will need to take the weather into consideration. Oftentimes, families opt to shoot at their own homes, utilizing the space you've already taken so much time to make your own and that truly reflects your family's style. Other options are parks, downtown locations, friends with property, and the list goes on and on. We have ample flexibility in finding the perfect location for your family. Since we are generally in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we often consider rain as a possibility (almost any time of the year). I purposely do not overbook myself in case we need to be flexible because of weather. When you book your family session, consider giving yourself room in your schedule that day. Sometimes we can get perfect weather by simply waiting. I also check in with you the day before your scheduled session to make a backup plan if it looks like the weather REALLY won't cooperate. We can also discuss styling your family in a way that makes a chilly weather session enjoyable for little ones

Styling Your Family
When it comes to deciding what to wear, a lot of people really stress over finding the perfect outfits. While I offer wardrobe consultations before your shoot, I've also gathered these pro tips for you to help you successfully create the look you're going for.
  • Coordinate. One way you can help your photos look "put together" without matching exactly is to choose outfits from a specific color palette. Choose 1-2 bright colors that you like the look of together. Choose clothes that have those two colors paired with neutral colors like white, cream, black, or brown (denim can count as a neutral). And mixing patterns is okay! As long as the colors coordinate, you're setting yourself up for gorgeous photos.
  • Stay Calm. If you're struggling or stressed as you're putting your family together for your photos, take a deep breath. Call someone for a second opinion--then trust what they say. You can always call me (or text me photos of possible outfit combos), or you can reach out to a friend who has an eye for style and coordination. Don't beat yourself up, and don't wear yourself out trying to make everything perfect. Getting your photos taken is supposed to be fun! Don't let stress around photos ruin the experience for you or for your family. Everything will be fine!
  • Be comfortable. Choose clothes that have a comfortable fit and fabric. We will want to capture photos of your family being natural, loving one another, and smiling. This can be hard when clothes are uncomfortable.
  • A few things to stay away from... People always ask me "what not to wear." There are a few things that can distract from your family's photos. One thing I urge you to consider is the insignia on your clothing. T-shirts with big brands or logos on them can distract from your photo, and after a few years they can even make your photos look dated. Also, consider choosing clothes that truly fit your body. It's tempting for some people to choose clothing that is either too tight or too baggy, but both of these do not translate well into your photos. You want clothes that fit and flatter.
  • Be yourself. These photos should represent you and your family. Keep in mind the kinds of things your kids like to wear on a daily basis. What are they comfortable in? Are there certain things they love to wear? Those things will change over the year, so instead of refusing to let your two-year-old wear froggy rain boots, you might consider using green as one of your main colors and rolling with it! Those are memories you'll want to hold on to. Be true to who you are and who your kids are; let that natural beauty shine through!
